2020 Unsung Hero Banquet cancelled

Scholarship winners will still be selected and awarded

The 2020 McCormick Unsung Hero Banquet, which would have been the 80th annual edition of this historic event which honors unsung athletes from Baltimore area schools, has become the latest victim of the Covid-19 virus pandemic which has brought much of daily American life to a halt. McCormick & Company, which holds the banquet and awards more than $100,000 in college scholarships annually, made the announcement with the following statement on Monday: “Out of concern for the health and wellbeing of all participants, the 2020 Unsung Hero Banquet has been cancelled. We are in the process of judging our Unsung Hero nominees at this time. We will be able to follow-up with more details as they become available on how we plan to honor these very deserving student athletes. “At this time we are deeply saddened by the cancellation, but McCormick recognizes the need to take preventative measures to ensure the safety of the public surrounding the COVID-19 virus.” The event had been scheduled for May 11th at Martin’s Valley Mansion in Cockeysville. Varsity Sports Network, which is the official media partner of the McCormick Unsung Hero banquet, had begun to announce the 2020 honorees on social media, prior to the shutdown of area high schools, last week. Shortly, VSN will begin announcing the remaining honorees, as well as report on the winners of the various scholarship awards, once plans are finalized. The Charles Perry McCormick Scholarship awards a $40,000 college scholarship, over four years, to one boy and one girl. In addition, one male and one female are award 2nd-place scholarships worth $7,500 each, while one male and one female are each awarded 3rd-place scholarships worth $5,000 each.
