Peyton Manning to speak at the McCormick Unsung Heroes banquet in May
The McCormick Unsung Heroes Award is unique, impactful and now about to celebrate its 75h anniversary.
On May 4th, a ballroom in Maryland will be filled with high school students, their families and team coaches who will come together to honor the traits of sportsmanship and team play. While there are thousands of awards given across the U.S. that honor high school star athletes, you will have a hard time finding one that honors those who are out of the spotlight, previously unheralded. And, a very special speaker is slated to help celebrate this milestone anniversary, Denver Broncos Quarterback, Peyton Manning.
Begun in 1940 by long-time McCormick Chairman Charles P. McCormick, the program honors high school seniors, males who play football and females who play basketball, in the greater Baltimore, MD area. They are nominated by their coaches as being their team’s best example of good sportsmanship and high character. From that group of about 110 each year, a young man and woman are selected by an independent panel to receive the highest honor of the program, the Charles Perry McCormick Scholarship worth $40,000 for each of the two students. Since the scholarship was added to the program in the late 1960s, well over a half million in scholarship money has been awarded.
The program is reflective of McCormick’s overall corporate social responsibility program to help improve communities. The award also underscores the company’s belief in continuing one’s education. Additionally, it embraces McCormick’s culture of accomplishment through team work. While high profile speakers annually provide the keynote address for the banquet, the focus is on the impressive young men and women.
