The Grand Prize Scholarship is worth $40,000 over four years!

Two 2nd Place Prizes: $7,500 each • Two 3rd Place Prizes: $5,000 each

Honoring high school seniors who have been models of sportsmanship and team spirit since 1940.

 

Each year, McCormick & Co. honors male and female high school seniors who are student athletes in the Baltimore area with the McCormick Unsung Heroes Award. Students are nominated from all sports who display such character traits as:

     • Good sportsmanship

     • Dedication

     • Integrity

     • Positive attitude


Each honoree becomes eligible for the Charles Perry McCormick Scholarship. The nominations from each school for the Unsung Heroes Award are reviewed by an independent panel and that group selects one young man and one young woman who have been exemplary in their team contributions to receive the additional recognition. Each Charles Perry McCormick Scholarship winner receives a $40,000 scholarship to help fund the continuation of their education.

In 2017, two 2nd-place prizes (one for a male and one for a female) were established, worth $7,500 each. And, two 3rd-place prizes (one for a male and one for a female) were also added, worth $5,000 each. This brings the total value of Unsung Hero scholarships awarded each year to $105,000.

LOGISTICS

  • At participating high schools, Unsung Heroes are selected by team coaches, the team or a combination of both. Coaches then complete each application form by explaining why the student should be recognized as an Unsung Hero.

  • Each submitted application is reviewed by a panel of judges at McCormick. They pick up to 10 applications for each sport to be considered for the scholarships. The final decision about the scholarship winners is made by an independent committee of local athletic league officials. They do not know the name of the student or the school that is making the nomination.

  • The selection of the Charles Perry McCormick Scholarship winners is based solely on the individual application submitted by the school. The winners do not know who wins the scholarships until it is announced at the end of the McCormick Unsung Heroes Award banquet.

  • All McCormick Unsung Heroes will receive a plaque imprinted with their name, school and the year.

  • On the night of the banquet, we will announce the names of the two winners – one female basketball player and one male football player -- of the Charles Perry McCormick Scholarship.

  • Each scholarship winner will receive a $40,000 scholarship over four years to be used to fund the continuation of the winner’s post-high school education.
